Skills Section on Your CV - What to Include

Make your skills section work for ATS and recruiters.

A clear skills section helps recruiters and ATS quickly see what you can do. It should support, not replace, the experience section. Here is what to include and how to organise it for Gulf and international applications.

Hard Skills (Technical and Role-Specific)

List technical skills that are relevant to the job: software (e.g. Excel, SAP, AutoCAD), tools, programming languages, or methodologies (e.g. Agile, Six Sigma). Use the same terms as the job description where accurate. For Gulf roles, include any sector-specific tools or standards you know. Be honest about your level (e.g. "Advanced" or "Basic") if you mention it.

Soft Skills (Behavioural and Interpersonal)

Include soft skills that the role requires: communication, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, time management, adaptability. Do not list too many; pick the ones that match the vacancy and that you can back up with examples in your experience section. Generic lists ("team player," "hard-working") are less convincing than skills tied to achievements.

Languages

In the Gulf, language skills matter. State your proficiency in English and Arabic (or other languages) clearly—e.g. "English: Native; Arabic: Conversational." Use standard levels (Native, Fluent, Advanced, Intermediate, Basic) so recruiters understand quickly.

Order and Format

Put the most relevant skills first. You can group them under subheadings (e.g. "Technical Skills," "Languages," "Soft Skills") or use a simple list. Keep the section scannable: bullet points or short lines work well. Avoid long paragraphs. Match keywords from the job description to improve ATS ranking.

Keep It Honest and Consistent

Only include skills you can demonstrate in an interview or on the job. Your experience section should support what you list. Consistency between your CV and LinkedIn profile also builds trust with recruiters.
