When and how to follow up after submitting a job application.

Following up after you apply for a job can show continued interest and keep your application on the recruiter's radar. It is important to do it at the right time and in a professional way. This guide covers when to follow up, what to say, and simple email templates you can adapt for Gulf and international roles.

When to Follow Up

Wait at least one to two weeks after the application deadline (or after you applied, if there is no deadline) before sending a first follow-up. If the job posting said "No follow-up calls or emails," respect that. Otherwise, one polite follow-up is usually acceptable. If you have had an interview, wait for the timeframe they gave you (e.g. "We will respond within two weeks") before following up.

What to Include in Your Email

Keep the email short. In the subject line, mention the job title and your name (e.g. "Follow-up: [Job Title] – [Your Name]"). In the body: remind them who you are and when you applied, reiterate your interest in the role, and ask politely for an update or next steps. Thank them for their time. Do not send long paragraphs or repeat your entire CV.

Sample Follow-Up Email (After Application)

Subject: Follow-up – [Job Title] Application – [Your Name]

Dear [Hiring Manager / Recruitment Team],

I applied for the [Job Title] position on [date]. I am still very interested in the role and would be grateful for any update on the status of my application.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best regards,
[Your full name]

After an Interview

Send a thank-you email within 24 hours of the interview. Thank them for the opportunity, mention one or two points from the conversation, and reiterate your interest. If you were told you would hear back by a certain date and that date has passed, you can send a brief follow-up asking for an update, using a similar tone to the template above.

Do Not Overdo It

One follow-up after an application and one after an interview (if needed) is usually enough. Repeated or aggressive follow-ups can seem pushy and may harm your chances. Be patient and professional.
