Career Gaps on Your CV - How to Explain Them

Address employment gaps honestly and professionally.

Career gaps—periods when you were not in paid employment—are common. They can be due to study, family responsibilities, health, relocation, or redundancy. Many employers in the Gulf and elsewhere are used to seeing them. The key is to present your history honestly and positively. Here is how to handle gaps on your CV.

Be Honest About Dates

Do not hide or falsify dates to cover a gap. Recruiters may check references or employment history, and dishonesty can cost you the job or your reputation. List your roles with accurate start and end dates. If you use only years (e.g. 2020–2022), ensure it is consistent and does not mislead.

Include Relevant Activities During the Gap

If during the gap you studied, volunteered, freelanced, or had a role that did not fit the "Employment" label, you can list it. For example: "Career break – full-time parent" or "2022–2023: Professional certification and freelance projects." This shows you used the time constructively and keeps your timeline clear.

Use a Short Explanation Where It Helps

For a long or recent gap, a brief note on your CV or in your cover letter can help. Keep it factual and professional (e.g. "Took a career break for family reasons; returned to work in 2024."). You do not need to share private details; a short, honest explanation is enough.

Emphasise Recent and Relevant Experience

Draw attention to your strengths: recent roles, relevant skills, and achievements. A strong summary and tailored bullet points help recruiters focus on what you can do. If you have done training or courses during or after the gap, include them to show you are up to date.

Be Ready to Discuss in an Interview

Some interviewers will ask about gaps. Prepare a short, honest answer that you are comfortable with. Focus on what you learned or how you stayed engaged (e.g. study, volunteering, family) and why you are ready and motivated to return to work. Confidence and clarity matter more than the gap itself.
