ATS Resume Tips - Get Past Applicant Tracking Systems
Make sure your CV gets seen by humans, not filtered out by software.
Applicant tracking systems (ATS) are used by many companies in the Gulf and worldwide to screen CVs before a human sees them. If your resume is not ATS-friendly, it may be rejected even when you are qualified. These tips help you format and write your CV so it passes ATS and still reads well to recruiters.
1. Use a Simple, Clean Layout
ATS software parses text from your document. Avoid complex tables, text boxes, multiple columns, headers and footers, and images or graphics. Use standard section headings (e.g. "Work Experience", "Education", "Skills") and a single, clear font. Bullet points are usually parsed well; keep them simple.
2. Match Keywords From the Job Description
ATS often ranks or filters CVs by keywords. Read the job description and include relevant terms in your summary, skills, and experience sections. Use the same wording where it fits naturally (e.g. "project management", "budget control", "stakeholder engagement"). Do not stuff keywords; keep sentences clear and honest.
3. Spell Out Acronyms When Relevant
Some systems search for full terms. If the job asks for "customer relationship management", mention "CRM (customer relationship management)" once, then you can use "CRM" elsewhere. This helps both ATS and human readers.
4. Save and Submit in the Right Format
When the employer asks for a file upload, prefer PDF or Word as specified. If no preference is given, a PDF often preserves formatting. Ensure your PDF is text-based (not a scanned image) so ATS can read it. Always use a clear file name, e.g. "YourName_CV.pdf".
5. Include a Skills or Key Competencies Section
A dedicated skills section with industry and role-specific terms makes it easier for ATS to match you to the job. List technical skills, tools, and soft skills that appear in the vacancy. Keep the list relevant and accurate.
6. Avoid Headers, Footers, and Unusual Formatting
Text in headers and footers is sometimes ignored by ATS. Put your name and contact details in the main body. Avoid graphics, logos, or decorative elements that might break parsing. Simple, linear structure works best.
